My learning fall and rise

In the beginning of the year, I was actually excited to be back at school. Well I guess that’s because I haven’t gone to school since before winter break of last school year. School started on August 12th. That morning I remember getting ready for school and being a bit nervous because I haven’t seen a lot of people in awhile and they haven’t seen me. I arrived at school with many goals, which were to succeed in all my classes, maintain a 3.0 or higher, and get back to being involved.      When Dr. Preston first told the class that our two options were to do book work or an online course. I was confused because after that, he left the classroom and left it up to our class to decide. That was the first time I have ever had a teacher do that. The whole class felt the same as I did, but we soon came to an agreement that we do the online course. Dr. Preston later explained to us what the online course was and what we will be doing throughout the year.      The online course that w

On self reliance pt 4

• a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. - hobgoblin means mischievous imp or sprite.  • to be great is to be misunderstood.  - not sure what this means, but I have an idea that it is saying that to be great is to be something like unique • character teaches above our wills - your personality says a lot about yourself

On self-reliance pt 2

• “..and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried.”   - you never know what you can do or what you’re capable of until you have tried • “A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best”    - you are most satisfied and happy when you have gave your all into something that you’ve worked hard on • What is it that makes children so courageous and parents so afraid?    - children are courageous because they’re minds are young but also open minded and they don’t know what they should think or not to think and it makes parents afraid because some kids are actually smarter than their age This made me think about all different things like truly made me think. Emerson is basically just talking about man kind and different traits about them but to be honest I can’t really describe how I see it. I see it as different quotes that mean something important and that goes for everyone and not just men.

Let me walk you through the Pedestrian

Ray Bradbury wrote an interesting story. The type of story that you might have to read a couple of times in order to understand it. Although this story maybe a bit confusing, soon you will start to put the pieces together and then it will all click. Let me tell you the gist of it.    In the beginning of the story, this man named Leonard Mead was a simple guy who enjoyed going on walks throughout November because he loved the weather. He was an author and he would write books and magazines, but soon they started to not sell so he wasn’t really employed. Nor was he married. This man lived alone and pretty much had nothing better to do than to walk for hours, it was a daily thing for him.    He was walking through a silent and dark neighborhood minding his business and talking to the houses. Talking to the houses was a thing he liked to do because well, he didn’t really have anyone else to talk to. As he kept walking along his way he noticed that he wasn’t the only one out in the n

Story of my life

As young teenagers we all make dumb decisions. Some may not be as bad as others and other decisions might be worse. Now, if you know me right now you’d probably think that I wouldn’t do anything so stupid that could cost me my life. You’re right, me as of right now wouldn’t. However myself in 2017 did.   One day in the month of September, 2017  I was planning on going to a quince with some of my friends. I got ready, and had to clean the house because Mexican moms don’t let you go out anywhere unless you clean! After that my mom and I went out to eat some food. Later on that day at about 6 is when my parents took me to the quince. The quince was located at Telephone Rd. If you’ve been there you know what the road looks like, straight and a lot of gravel. So once I got dropped off I said goodbye to my parents and met up with my friends. The party was pretty boring at first, but then we saw a few of our other friends.   We asked them what they thought about the party and they agreed

So this guy goes for a walk

The reason why Ray Bradbury wrote “The Pedestrian” was to bring awareness that many people have been treated unlawfully by police offers for not doing anything wrong. What happened in his life contributed to this story because he was a simple, honest man who was simply just strolling the neighborhoods but also since his work wasn’t selling and he didn’t have a wife his life seemed depressing. Which is a reason why he would talk to himself and how the cop thought he was crazy.

Same words different people

One thing I learned from the conversation today in class is that people can do things differently. For example, with the definitions for some of the words I would describe them in my own words. As for my partner, she took the definition from google. I would also like to add that I too took definitions from google, so this shows that people can have the same idea but also do it their own style as well.

Investing in me

After high school I plan to attend a university but I also am planning to join the navy. One reason I am thinking about joining the navy is the benefits they offer. A recruiter came to one of my classes and told us that right now they are giving seniors a $3,000 bonus just for joining. They also pay for you housing and give you money for books. Although this is plan as of right now, I am still debating on whether if I should do cheer next year or if I should get a job to save money. Doing cheer and looking for a job is extremely difficult because not many places want to work with a busy schedule and mostly every place wants you available on weekends which I am not.

Letter to a mentor

Dear Everyone,                       To be honest I don’t know who I’m writing this letter to. I don’t have anyone in particular that I would like to talk to yet. Or maybe this letter is to everyone. When I am out in public sometimes I  evaluate how one person acts. Some people are kind, while others aren’t. So that brings me to questions that are always on my mind. How can one individual be so mean?  My parents and I talk about this a lot. When someone is rude to me I would of course defend myself but sometimes I don’t always  have a better “comeback” or can be as mean as they were because I’m genuinely a nice person and it takes a lot for me to be mean to you. So when I go home and tell my parents they always say that sometimes people act like that because they aren’t happy with themselves or at home or that that’s just the type of person they are. However I would like to help those people. Being nice doesn’t take a lot. This morning as I was leaving the cafeteria this kid was co

First Impression of a dream

My first impression of the poem was that it is basically saying that dreams aren’t real. That even though it may seem real in the dream it really isn’t. Also the main question it seems to ask is everything we see is it a dream or seem to be a dream? Certain situations can feel as if it is a dream but in reality it’s real life.

My essay essay

The story Young Goodman Brown can give you so many thoughts. Such as, was he really dreaming? Did he actually see those things? Were his peers and wife actually who they said they were? These questions come to mind when reading the story and when you have finished reading. However, I believe that he was in fact dreaming.       In the story, Young Goodman Brown or Brown for short, was going on a journey through the woods to attend a meeting. Before he had left, there was a pink ribbon that faith wore. Throughout the story the pink ribbon symbolizes faith was with him and to not lose faith. Along his journey he encounters different people. One of those people was a man who used a cane so he could walk, but he offers it to Brown. This questions whether if Brown is going to take it or not, he doesn’t.       This man Brown meets has a conversation with him. He tries to convince brown to join his side and be with the devil and that all of his other friends including his wife Faith

My Thesis Statement

I think it’s better to write an essay without a prompt. One reason why is because since you’re so used to having prompts it bores you so you don’t give it as much effort because you’re tired of doing the same type of essays. It would be more interesting to write an essay based off of what you want to write about and what’s most important for you to talk about.

Young Old Good Bad

I think Hawthorne wrote “Young Goodman Brown” to inform readers that every person can have two sides of them. Stephen King probably had a big affect from this story because it made him question everyone around him and probably soon found out about a person in particular who turned out to be not who he thought the person was. The power of our imaginations can paint a picture in our heads of what we want to believe, but we shouldn’t just trust our opinion without even getting to know the person truly.

Young Goodman Brown

1. Hawthorne’s purpose for writing this story was to tell readers that people have some bad in them but it’s up to them if they give in or not. 2. I agree that the name suits Faith’s personality because she was the faith/hope for Goodman brown along his journey and to guide him into the good rather than the bad. At first in the beginning of the story he did not have true faith in her because he thought that she was doubting him. 3. The pink ribbons signify Brown’s wife Faith which keeps Brown’s good intentions in him. 4. Everything Brown witnessed was a terrible dream but also important. In the passage it states, “an evil purpose he had.” To me this gives me the idea that Brown had a bad thought or intention and by having this dream it made him rethink his choice. 5. I think the old man was actually the devil or was supposed to be thought of as the devil. I would like to add that in stories or movies there are those little characters on the shoulders. One is the angel which tel

Literature Analysis #1

1. The plot of the story I am reading is to find out what the main cause is for kids who are getting leukemia. There are suspicions that it is the water which is causing it and later they soon find out that the water did contain harmful chemicals, however they aren’t sure yet. So, they keep doing research on it. 2. In my opinion, the theme for this novel would be darkness and light. In this case, the darkness would be all of the young kids/ adults who are getting leukemia and not knowing what the cause of it is and wondering whether if they could have prevented it or not. As for light, it would be finding out why they got cancer and knowing that it wasn’t their fault. 3. Jonathan Harr the author of this book, seems to me that he was a very interesting person and clever. When out with his friends or family he probably was the smartest and saw things from a much different perspective than others. What makes me think this about him is his book.. His book is based on a true story. Real

The medium is the message

The most appropriate way to communicate would be to communicate in person. I think so because in person you can ask/get more information. You can also get even more information by just the body language of the person you’re talking to. Not only that but you can also tell by the tone in the person’s voice if they truly want to talk to you or not, or help you out.

I ain’t got time for this

What I do with my time from the beginning to the end of that day is actually a lot. In the morning I wake up, get ready for school, and then leave to school. For about 8 hours everyday I spend at school in my classes learning. Then once school ends at 2:55 I change for practice which starts at 3:15 and ends at 5:15 sometimes 6. Once I get home from practice I shower, do my homework then eat dinner. Or sometimes it’s the other way around. This schedule of mine doesn’t necessarily help reach any big goals of mine in particular such as job wise. However it does reach my goal of wanting to maintain good grades and being involved in school.

The Earth on Turtle’s Back

This story has a great over all meaning. The moral of the story is basically teaching readers that it doesn’t matter how big you are. What matters is if you are really determined to accomplish your goal.  Also I liked how they made the animals talk in this story because even tho it’s very unrealistic, I was still able to picture it perfectly in my head. It was a great use of imagery. I also feel like it was more of a lesson learning story.

Today I was thinking

After Dr.Preston finished talking about his idea of having an agenda for each day of the week, I thought to myself that that was a great idea. Personally, I’m the type of person who likes to be organized and that’s one of the main reasons why I would enjoy having this agenda because each week we will know what to do or what’s expected of that day. Also, I like how each day has its own memorable name because it will catch on quickly and students won’t be confused on what to do for that specific day.

I care about your understanding

My name is Aaliyah Rodriguez. I am 16 years old and a junior in high school. One thing I like is to be involved.  I’m in the FBLA club and I also enjoy doing cheer. A lot of people mispronounce name, so I go by Liyah because it’s easier and shorter. Also, it sometimes gets annoying when people misspell my name as well but I understand because no one would think to spell it with two A’s at the beginning. WINGSTOP! I love wingstop. Boneless wings are way better than bone in. My favorite color is every color. I think every color is pretty to be honest. I’m redoing the introduction post because I didn’t really talk about myself.I talked more about my day/week. Now I hope this post helps get you to know me better!

The first 50 pages

The book I’m reading is called A civil Action by Jonathan Harr. The first couple of pages weren’t all that  interesting but as I kept reading I got more into it. So far where I’m at right now in my book the setting takes place in a small town called Woburn. In this small town a bunch of young kids are getting leukemia and all the kids are from Woburn. So, one of the mother’s has a suspicion that the cause of the cancer is because of the water. The water in Woburn isn’t good at all. It is discolored and has a weird taste/ smell. However no one seems to be as interested as her in her theory.

The making of an essay

When I think of the word “essay” or hear it, immediately I get overwhelmed because who wants to do an essay?  In the past when I have written essays I haven’t really had trouble. I usually get a good grade on them. However I don’t like doing them nor do I understand how to do certain type of essays. I don’t understand how to write an argumentative essay because my teachers have never asked for that type of essay. I also prefer to write rather than type an essay.

I can read!

Hack to school

1. This class is about managing your own blog/ using technology and getting in the habit of being responsible to post when needed without our teacher reminding us. 2. The easiest part if this class would be posting on our blogs rather than doing book word like any other English class. 3. I think the hardest part of this class is having to memorize poems because it can be tricky sometimes. 4. I have learned how to manage my own blog which I have never done before and never thought to do. 5. My big question is “Who created the alphabet and the sounds for them?”

Thinking about what I want to think about

My question was “Who created the alphabet and who decided which letters got certain sounds?” After I did my research, I found that Semitic people who lived in or near Egypt created the alphabet. They used their own specific symbols. Semitic people also had developed the sounds for the letters but it was refined and spread to other civilizations by the Phoenicians.

Communication strategies of a hacker

The mentors use of diction, syntax, and tone helps get his message across because of the words he uses. At first his tone of the text is speaking for teenagers, defending them. Now as you continue to read his tone changes into more of a properly tone. This is the message he is getting across to the adults. The way he uses syntax is also important because he uses the phrase “damn kids” a lot and I think this helps with his message because he is mimicking adults because they always say that about teens. His tone is mad, angry, upset because of how teenagers are getting treated and called many different things.

Getting to know you

It is important knowing the people around us because I think who you surround yourself with or is in the same vicinity as you are takes a big part in how your day goes. This important because everyone is different and their affect/attitude may annoy you or may not. Knowing who is around you can be very helpful because if you don’t like how a certain person acts you can avoid that person by staying away from them.

Response to “Conscience of a Hacker”

My initial response to “Conscience of a Hacker” was I was a bit confused. I was confused because usually people say that hackers are the bad ones. So when the narrator was taking sides with the hacker or defending them, since he too was one of them. I was took by surprise. However as I continued reading what he was saying was true. There are people who commit murder, build bombs, and make wars. People who basically commit much larger crimes than hackers do and yet, the hackers are the criminals.

Today I Asked A Question

Today in class I heard a few words that I am not familiar with. Interdisciplinary. Meaning more than one of branch of knowledge. I have not heard this word before that I can remember. I felt like today was a good start because we took in information and also I liked how we had to ask any question that came to mind. The question that I asked was “Who created the alphabet and who decided which letters got certain sounds?” I always think of questions like this because it honestly interests me how things are in today’s world. Also  I wonder who came up with things like that which made the world into how it is today. For example words and their meanings.

Are you entitled to an opinion?

I believe that you are entitled to your own opinion because not everyone thinks the same way. For example, I can think that a certain music artist is not good but a peer of mine may  think otherwise. Now is there anything wrong with that? No. Although you are entitled to your own opinion, you should not use that when you disagree with someone on a certain topic. Why? Well because using that does not get you anywhere. It doesn’t give any evidence as to why you’re right and the other person is wrong. Simply just gives you something irrelevant to say.

A second helping hand of Socratic seminar

What is a right? - privilege - power • Any time someone has a right another person has an obligation.  Ex: A pedestrian has the right to use the crosswalk but the driver has the obligation to stop and let them cross. • Argument is a search for truth. - arguments occur because one of the two sides want to be right so they are arguing back and forth trying to figure out who is right or the truth.

Socratic Method

The Socratic method is good in many different ways. To start off it is a good method to use because it can get the class more comfortable with each other especially being a new class and all. Also it gives students the opportunity to ask questions on something they don’t understand or are unsure about. Although, in the article it states that “the Socratic method sometimes evokes too much disrespect for authority.” I am not quite sure why this method would cause disrespect.

“The Right to Your Opinion”

When I read this article at first I thought it was going to tell me about rights that I already knew however I was wrong. This article also changed my view on the phrase that a lot of people use which is “I have the right to my own opinion.” Now if I would have never read this article I probably would have still used the “my own opinion” card, but I will not use that phrase again. It is true that using this phrase does not accomplish anything or make you right in anyway. It simply just gives you something to say because more than likely you probably don’t know what to say or don’t have anything to support your opinion.

First week of school

So far these past two days of being a junior have been pretty good. I like all of my classes and I enjoy being a T.A. My goal for this year is to have all A’s or B’s, but not anything below that. I have a good feeling that I will be able to fulfill my goal because I am ready to be focused, on task, and organized this year. A goal outside of school for me would be to get a job as well. I have an interview today on the phone with the manager from Chick-fil-A so I hope it goes well.
